As I write this it’s Monday morning. We are all grappling with the surge in Covid cases. Here in Michigan, as in many parts of the country, new restrictions have been imposed and the schools in our community are being shut down for a few weeks to try to reduce the spread. The downside of these circumstances is that we’re forced to juggle more. But the upside, at least for me, is the realization that I’m getting better at taking things in stride; at letting things go that I can’t control – which is pretty much everything except my thoughts and my actions.

Relinquishing control may seem limiting, but it is surprisingly empowering. To know that life may and will toss things at me that are hard and unexpected, but that I get to decide how to respond and show up, is the ultimate form of empowerment. Choosing to harness situations and turn them into something positive and strong helps me to move forward. It’s not easy to do but it is possible. And each time I’m able to let go of my frustration at not being able to control life it gets easier the next time around.

The painting above is titled “Letting Go.” I painted it a few weeks back. I was inspired by the beautiful trees in northern Michigan. The trees seemed to be trying to hang on to their lovely leaves but the winds continued to blow them away, one by one. To me, it was symbolic of my efforts to let go of the things I can’t change and embrace what I can. I hope you enjoy it and find your way to embrace the best in the worst.
