Meet Maker Alissa Thomson
Meet our December Made to Make Maker Alissa Thomson of IndieGrow Flower Farm! I love Alissa's story and her beautiful boho floral style and I can't wait to learn all of her tips on designing and creating amazing flower arrangements. Alissa will be leading our December Made to Make workshop: Create a Winter Floral Arrangement at The Little Fleet.
Alissa is a mother, wife, gardener, floral designer, herbalist and entrepreneur that loves to bake, kayak, hike, design, craft, brew, camp, swim, paint, travel and is always up for an adventure! She tries to eat organically, recycle, and do her part in taking care of our earth. She loves coffee, brunch, going to concerts, eating foody foods, and locally brewed beverages. She’s been in the garden her entire life, and picked flowers and arranging them for others for as long as she can remember.
She is looking forward to sharing her passion for flowers with you!
What is it about northern Michigan that brings you creative inspiration?
Everything!! It’s really my favorite place and I love that I get to design at some of the most beautiful venues in the area.
How did you get interested/started in your creative field?
I sat in a cubicle for 10 years and loved to garden as a hobby. The hobby turned into a passion and when we moved back to Michigan I said I didn’t want to be in a cubicle any more and was going to go for it. I was lucky enough to garden for Filed of Flowers North and before I knew it I was designing flowers too. She was the absolute best mentor and had some of the best free lancers that I was able to learn a ton from.
What’s your creative routine? How often are you making?
In the summer pretty much daily. We do market bouquets, subscription bouquets and weddings every weekend. That goes all the way through fall and then it’s into wreath season. Once we’re in he middle of winter it’s much less, unless we get a wedding or elopement, but I still have to have flowers at least once a month.
What’s the biggest hurdle you’ve had to overcome in your creative journey?
Tackling it now—Hiring help.
