Life and Whim was started by Jay and Heather Harrington, who moved to Traverse City for no particular reason (you could say on a whim) other than a desire to live a purposeful, meaningful and active life, and to expose their three young daughters to the magic this region offers. This blog, therefore, is also their vehicle to share their experiences – good and bad – and the lessons learned along the way.
Jay and Heather also own and operate a brand strategy and design firm, Harrington, which serves a nationwide client base of sophisticated professional services firms. They run the agency “virtually,” working from home in Traverse City with a team of employees who also work from home (or wherever they may be at the moment). One of Jay and Heather’s primary motivations behind moving to Traverse City was the desire to build their careers around their lives, rather than their lives around their careers, and they hope others who desire to do the same can learn something from their experience.
Here is a snapshot of our family:

Author of One of a Kind: A Proven Path to a Profitable Practice (business non-fiction book for lawyers), which was released by his publisher, Attorney at Work, in April 2016.
News junkie. Sports and fitness – running, CrossFit, golf, skiing…pretty much anything outdoors. Family. Cooking great food with fresh ingredients. Reading. Movies. Beer, wine and scotch (knows little about, but enjoys). Detroit Tigers. Writing. All things entrepreneurial.
Award-winning creative director and co-owner (with husband Jay) of Harrington, a creative services firm that specializes in brand strategy, brand design, content marketing and website design.
The Great Outdoors. Crafts with her girls. Reading. Sewing. Fitness. Graphic, interior and fashion design. Eating Jay’s cooking. Coffee in the morning, wine in the evening. Loves all things creative.
Curious and inquisitive. Creative to her core. Loves bugs and monsters as much as ponies and princesses. Wants a chicken and a pony named buttercup.

Sweet soul and killer sense of humor. Loves carbs. Good dance moves. Infectious laugh.
Mini-golden Doodle. Still hasn’t adjusted to the role of fuzzy big sister. Hates squirrels. Loves cuddling.
